Teacher Appreciation Week started as one day back in 1953, thanks to Eleanor Roosevelt. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) elevated it to a week in 1984. This is an amazing opportunity for the American Legion Auxiliary to show teachers across the country how much they are valued. It is a wonderful way to honor educators for their lasting impact on student lives and the vital role they play in society.

Planning is important! Whether you plan something each day or focus on Teacher Appreciation Day (May 5), starting now will get you ready.

Contact the school’s PTA president to see if you can collaborate with them to reach more teachers.

Involve ALA Junior members in making thank-you cards, writing letters to their teachers, or making collages of fun events at the school. Post thank-you notes on social media, and tag schools with #thankateacher or #teacherappreciation.

If considering a gift card for teachers, consider cards that can be redeemed for items needed in their classrooms. Teachers often spend their own money to have supplies on hand for projects.

There are many ideas for this week! Here are a few more from the national ALA Education Committee:

  • Invite teachers to a teacher appreciation night at a local post, with district leadership and school board members in attendance to extend thanks to the teachers. Offer heavy appetizers or a light meal to attendees.
  • Select a Teacher of the Year and a Support Staff of the Year to celebrate outstanding faculty and staff.

Like veterans, teachers are on the front lines, serving their community daily. Honoring teachers shows respect and appreciation and demonstrates that the American Legion Auxiliary is here to help.
