National Poppy Day is our opportunity to share the knowledge about the poppy flower and keep it fresh in everyone’s minds about the pain our country has suffered, and what we have endured to give us the freedoms we have today.

The American Legion Auxiliary distributes millions of poppies annually. Donations are collected and used to support our active-duty military, veterans, and their families.

Keeping in mind that the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion Family in 1920, the American Legion Auxiliary started our distribution of the poppy flower in 1924. These brave men and women will continue to deserve our honor, respect, and support for centuries to come. This is a program that simply MUST continue.

For that reason, it is important as well that we continue to support the ALA’s Poppy Poster Contest and Little Miss Poppy to educate our youth. Keep sharing stories and the meaning of the poppy flower so they will assist in continuing to carry out our journey for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the inaugural National Poppy Day Virtual 5K. Please share your 5K experiences with friends and encourage them to participate in next year’s 5K. Happy National Poppy Day too!

Wear a poppy, and share our story on NATIONAL POPPY DAY!
