ALA national committee applications open Nov. 1 - Dec. 1

Posted On: Friday, 30 October 2026

Wanted: your time, talents, and ideas at the national level! A great way to share your passion is through serving on an American Legion Auxiliary national committee. Are you ready? Do you know someone who would bring skills to further the Auxiliary?

ALA national committee applications are open for only a month, Nov. 1 to Dec. 1, available on the national wesbite.

Attend the ALA Academy Live webinar, From Department Leadership to National Service, from noon to 12:45 p.m. ET Nov. 9 to learn more about the application and appointment process, expectations, responsibilities, and mindset of national service.

Register for and learn more about the webinar here.

Unable to make the webinar? Good news — all ALA Academy webinars are recorded, so you can review the video while you go through the application. All recordings are available at www.ALAforVeterans.org/ALA-Academy.

Regardless of appointment, tasks will include monitoring and regularly communicating by email and phone, attending virtual meetings, managing deadlines, collaborating with fellow committee members and National Headquarters staff, and writing reports, articles, and social media posts. Other tasks will vary depending on the committee appointment.

To effectively help our veterans, military, their families, and communities, successful candidates need to be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.).

Read about the various committees below to find the perfect match for your passion and skills:

Americanism: Promote patriotism and responsible citizenship.

ALA Girls Nation: Provide a government-in-action program for high school girls who’ve completed their junior year. This committee attends and participates in the execution of the July educational program in the Washington, D.C. area. Committee members need to be capable of the weeklong physical and social demands of this position while supervising high school girls in D.C. summer heat.

Auxiliary Emergency Fund: Raise funds to support and increase member awareness of the Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF).

Children & Youth: Work collaboratively with The American Legion to promote programs that protect, care for, and support children and youth with a focus on military and veterans’ children.

Community Service: Promote the ALA’s commitment to making our communities better places to live by supporting local service projects.

Constitution & Bylaws: Inform and educate ALA members on the importance and power of having properly written, regularly reviewed and updated governing documents at all levels of the organization. Educate members how to do so.

Education: Promote quality education for children — especially military children — and adults. Encourage schools to invite veterans to speak in their classrooms and support scholarship opportunities of the ALA and American Legion.

Finance: Oversee the development and implementation of general national financial policy subject to approval by the National Executive Committee (NEC), provide oversight of budgeted funds in the budget, and report any significant variance to the NEC.

Junior Activities: Inspire active participation in members ages 17 and younger to help them grow in the Auxiliary. Motivate Juniors to continue their ALA membership into adulthood. This position requires the ability to attend national Junior meetings held in different cities across America, as well as physical agility and endurance.

Leadership: Help better equip members to serve in leadership positions confidently.

Legislative: Provide information and assistance to ALA members to advocate for The American Legion’s legislative agenda. (Click here to see the Legion’s priorities for the 2026-2027 administrative year).

Membership: Encourage and support the nationwide effort to attract and retain a diverse, active membership and establish new units to ensure the ALA’s future.

National Security: Promote a strong national defense by strengthening and supporting military servicemembers and their families.

Poppy: Educate ALA members and the public on the significance of the poppy and the program’s financial benefit to veterans, military, and their families.

Public Relations: Work with ALA National Headquarters’ Communications & Marketing Division on maintaining a positive public image of the ALA by encouraging fellow members to be visible in their communities through proper branding and informing the public about our mission.

Risk & Compliance: Charged with assuming an independent oversight and advisory position with the responsibility for decision-making resting on governance, review policies designed to mitigate threats to the ALA, and provide perspective in areas that could be potential risks. Members must understand safeguarding the ALA requires having — and following — proper procedures for oversight, internal controls, and a checks-and-balance system.

Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation: Promote events, programs, and services that assist and enhance the lives of veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors by ensuring the best quality of life possible and the continuing honor of their memory. This position requires the ability to travel to the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival, as well as physical agility and endurance for the duration of the weeklong event.
