The national leaders of the American Legion Auxiliary consist of the National President, National Vice President, Five (5) Divisional National Vice Presidents, National Historian, National Chaplain, National Secretary and National Treasurer.

The National President is the official representative of the organization. She speaks for the organization to internal and external audiences, and represents the nation's largest patriotic organization of women at government and social functions, in the United States and abroad. She traditionally promotes a special project that offers members a focus for fundraising activities. She is responsible for the leadership, reputation of the American Legion Auxiliary, and for cooperation with the officers and chairmen of both the American Legion Auxiliary and The American Legion. This is an elected position for a one-year term of office.

The National Vice President is the second highest office of the American Legion Auxiliary. The National Vice President assists the National President in many different activities, as well as familiarizing herself with the duties of the National President so that she will be prepared in the event she is called upon to represent her. This is an elected, one-year term of duty.

The Divisional Vice Presidents are nominated in their Division Caucuses at National Convention and elected by the National Convention body. They represent five geographic divisions of the American Legion Auxiliary, based on Department (state) locations: Central, Eastern, Northwestern, Southern and Western. One National Vice President is elected from each division each year.

The National Historian is responsible for compiling the complete history of the American Legion Auxiliary administrative year, including the National President's travels. This is a one-year term of office.

The National Chaplain is responsible for prayers and devotional thoughts throughout her year in office. She compiles a Book of Prayers for the National President, to be presented at National Convention. All of the content she uses must be non-denominational. This is a one-year term of office.

The National Secretary and National Treasurer are full-time national staff positions because the jobs are renewed each year at National Convention by the National Executive Committee (NEC).
